A cultural journey around the world

At the end of September and early October Paris will beat to the rhythms of foreign cultures. Forty-four cultural institutes will give visitors the chance to cross cultural lines and travel around the world with exhibitions, concerts, shows and debates.

As every year the FICEP (Forum of the Foreign Cultural Institutes in Paris) organises the Week of Foreign Cultures. This event gives the opportunity to discover 44 of the 46 cultural institutes established in Paris where more than 400 hundred expats work to promote their country’s culture and artists. This 10th edition will take place from September 23rd to October 2nd and will have as its theme “What’s new since 2000” and the FICEP will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this event with a concert by the Pop Art duo made up of Luxembourgian and Lebanese pianists Francesco Tristano and Rami Khalifé.

 More than 80 events
Visitors will thus travel around the world without leaving Paris, when attending a concert or a conference, wandering through an exhibition, watching a movie or discovering literary works…. In total more than 80 events are on the agenda – including exhibitions that will last till the end of October - and all are listed on the FICEP website. Here are some examples.
The Canadian Cultural Centre will host exhibitions and screen documentary film about Canadian intellectual figure Marshall McLuhan. It also offers concerts and a play based upon the life of Emily Dickinson. The Iranian Cultural Centre will screen ten of the best Iranian feature films ever shot. The Egyptian Cultural Centre will present exhibitions about comic strip Omar le Chéri and avant garde sculptor Ahmed Keshta as well as a concert by Hishal Gad who fuses jazz with traditional Arab music. The Maison du Danemark will host an exhibition about video games creation in Denmark.

 Concerts, films and exhibitions
Worldwide famous Portuguese pianist Felipe Pinto-Ribeiro will give a concert at the Embassy of Portugal. The Maison du Japon à Paris will screen fiction, animated and documentary films from the Kansai region and hosts an exhibition displaying prints by famous painters such as Hokusai. At the Chinese Cultural Centre, workshops will give visitors the possibility to learn about Chinese traditional music and medicine as well as calligraphy and a photographic exhibition will highlight how traditional culture is transmitted to children. A play by Adheisen Roosen will be held at the Dutch Institute and spectators will get the chance to meet the playwright.
The Goethe Institut will host an exhibition, a debate and film screenings, all focusing on climate change. Young Italian artists display their works at the Italian Cultural Institute. An exhibition about the cultural heritage, a concert of traditional music, a musical show and workshops will be held at the Vietnamese Cultural Centre.

 Swedish design
The Austrian Cultural Forum will organize an exhibition tracing the career and unveiling projects of Austrian architect Dietmar Feichtinger. At the auditorium of the Cité Internationale des Arts, the Taiwanese Cultural Centre offers a contemporary concert – performance called “The Magic Lantern”. One of the main figures of the Czech surrealist movement, Alena Nadvornikova will present some of her works at the Czech Centre. The Swedish Institute will host an exhibit of Swedish design as well as a concert – performance and will screen humorous short films. Five of the greatest contemporary Greek ceramists will display their works at the Hellenic Cultural Centre. As to the Slovakian Institute, it will screen a selection of animated movies from the 6s, 70s and 80s.
All along the week, most of the institutes will also give the possibility to get free initiation to about forty foreign languages and some of them will even organize “Speak dating” evenings on September 26th.

 Initiation to foreign languages
The opportunity to learn the rudiments of Chinese calligraphy at the Chinese and Taiwanese cultural centres, Persian at the Iran Cultural Centre or literal Arabic at the Institute of the Arabic World and at the Egypt Cultural Centre. But it will be also possible to discover more uncommon idioms. Indeed, languages from Balkan and Baltic countries will be taught at the Maison d’Europe et d’Orient, as well as Inuktitut, the idiom spoken by Eskimos, at the Canadian Cultural Centre.
Moreover several institutes will offer specific activities for children : fairytales and legends performed or read both in French and in the original language, workshops, screening of comic movies and short animated films. Lastly, on October 1st the Week of Foreign Cultures will coincide with the Nuit Blanche (White Night) and that day several cultural institutes will offer special shows and remain open late into the night.
