A glimpse of the Ardèche wines

The southern part of the Ardèche department is home to a few dozens wineries. they produce wines ranging from famous Côtes du Rhône to lesser know Côtes du Vivarais and Coteaux de l'Ardèche.

If you go in the Ardèche, make sure you taste the local wines. Still little known, they offer excellent value for money. Vineyards and wineries are located in three sectors primarily in the south of the department. Along the Rhone and especially near the confluence with the river Ardeche, on hillsides and terraces rich with round pebbles belonging to the Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Village AOP where the most common grape varieties are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. On the plateaus and limestone slopes situated on both sides of the Ardèche gorges that are classified in the Côtes du Vivarais AOP where are grown Grenache and Syrah as well as white Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. In the rest of the southern half of the department, in areas with varied soils that have been given the Ardeche and Coteaux de l'Ardèche IGP status where are grown a wide variety of grapes. Grenache, Syrah, Viognier and Chardonnay are the most common but there are also the Chatus, an ancient variety that gives complex, full-body wines with strong tannins as well as red and black fruits aromas.
