Eight regions produce crémants, sparkling wines that are produced according to very strict rules ensuring their quality. Reasonably priced, they can be served as an aperitif and paired with many dishes.
Champagne aside, the best French sparkling wines are the crémants. They are produced by traditional method, which means that the second fermentation giving the wine its bubbles must happen inside the bottle, and according to strict rules such as limited yields, hand picking of the grapes and ageing on laths for several months. It gives finesse and comlexity to the crémants. Eight regions producing sparkling wines were awarded the Crémant AOC, each one using different grape varieties. Pinot blanc, riesling, pinot noir, pinot gris, auxerrois and chardonnay in Alsace. Sémillon, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon and merlot in Bordeaux. Pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot blanc, pinot gris, gamay, aligoté and melon in Bourgogne. Clairette, aligoté and muscat in Die. Poulsard, pinot noir, trousseau, chardonnay and savagnin in Jura. Chardonnay, chenin, mauzac and pinot noir in Limoux. Chenin, cabernet-franc, chardonnay, pinot noir and grolleau in the Loire Valley. Jacquère, altesse, chardonnay, pinot noir and gamay in Savoie. Hence a large range of wines boasting different tastes and characteristics. Especially as independent winemakers and cooperatives have over the years extended their range of products by launching rosés, single variety, aged in barrels, blanc de noirs, zero dosage and vintage cremants. Consequence, nowadays there are crémants for all tastes and pairing with a wide variety of dishes and food. Here is our selection.
